Spring Exhibition 2022 Report
2022 Welland Valley Art Society Spring Exhibition
The Spring Exhibition is now closed. The selection panel for this exhibition were faced with a record-breaking entry of 215 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures.
Independent judge Beverley Wrigley-Pheasant of Gallery Stamford was joined by WVAS members Keith Aldridge, Kay Clark, Maggy Herbert-Jobson, Sarah Jennings and Teresa Sands to make up the panel of judges.
After much consideration, the entry was winnowed down to 141 artworks, but as these included a high number of large paintings it meant the team of hangers had their work cut out to accommodate everything.
The result is a gallery full of varied and colourful works that will appeal to a broad range of visitors. Centre stage is the WVAS Award winner Our World 2050, an imposing dystopian abstract painted by Anne Lindley.
The other prize-winners were:
• Lin Chatfield’s Submerged (winner of the Buckingham Press Award for abstract work), highlighting ‘an absorbing composition and subtle palette of colours.
• Stamford Contemporary Art Prize for the best work in watercolour went to Terry Preen’s Beadnell Beach which perfectly captures the high summer shimmer of sun and sea.
* The John Fountain Prize which goes to a work based on life study, went to Robert Hooke for his well-observed ceramic sculpture.
The awards were presented by Stamford Town Mayor, Councillor Gloria Johnson
Scattered around the gallery are the commended works of seven different artists – Barbara Allen’s Gower Coast, Deborah James’ West Cornwall, Di Gutterdge’s Safe Passage, Sue Johnson’s Whisper Softly, Margaret Lindsay’s Line of Trees and Philip Dawson’s Bluebells, New Forest.
The following 6 artworks were commended…..
